Mogale Gold - Making the most of AMD

A Gold reclamation operation on the West Rand of Johannesburg is running a tight ship to increase profitability.
Problem: Low grades in the tailings make it a marginal operation.
Solution: Effective and consistent mining.
Although the current gold price has a lot to do with the well-being of Mintails' Mogale Gold operation in the West Rand, the effectiveness of the operation, in part, eliminates issues of low grade usually associated with gold reclamation operations. The business of mining discarded residue is not for the fain- hearted. Mintails purchased its 100Mt of tailings in the Randfontein Cluster with rehabilitation cost liabilities amounting to almost R400-million. However, Jan Jacobs, General Manager of Mogale Gold, points out that consolidating the tailings, centralising the residue and rehabilitating the footprint, the mine will be able to reduce the final rehabilitation liability to less than R100-million.
